Rabies vaccine

Rabies Vaccine - Indications

The Rabies Vaccine is a preventative treatment essential for individuals who have been potentially exposed to the rabies virus, a disease primarily transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. High-risk individuals, such as veterinarians, animal handlers, or travelers to regions with a history of rabid wild animals, are also encouraged to get vaccinated. The vaccine provokes an immune response that helps the body fight the virus if exposed.

Rabies Vaccine - How to Use, Dosage

The obvious exposure to rabies requires a series of four doses of the vaccine. Doses are usually given on days 0, 3, 7, and 14 following exposure. The vaccine is administered into the deltoid muscle in the upper arm. For children under the age of 12 months, the outer region of the thigh is the preferred location. The vaccine should not be injected into the gluteal region as it may result in decreased antibody response.

Rabies Vaccine - Contraindications

People with severe, life-threatening allergies to the vaccine or any component of the vaccine should not receive the rabies vaccine. Additionally, those with serious illness at the time of vaccination might be advised to delay the vaccination until the symptoms of their illness have lessened.

Rabies Vaccine - Interactions with Drugs

Currently, there is no substantial evidence suggesting the Rabies Vaccine to interact negatively with other drugs. Nonetheless, it is always best to discuss with a healthcare provider one’s medical history, current health conditions, and any other medications taken to ensure the vaccine's optimum functionality.

Rabies Vaccine - Side Effects

As with any medication, the Rabies Vaccine may cause side effects. These can range from mild symptoms like soreness, redness, swelling, or itching at the site of the injection, headache, nausea, and abdominal pain. Severe side effects like serious allergic reactions are rare but demand immediate attention.
